In-Person Professional Development Sessions – The PD will model instruction and provide strategies and insights for teaching three-dimensional science consistent with the Arizona Science Standards and the vision for science teaching and learning from the 2011 National Research Council’s Report A Framework for K-12 Science Education: Practices, Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts. Brett Moulding, Director of the Partnership for Effective Science Teaching and Learning (PESTL), will deliver all PD sessions.

Cohort 1 and 3 are for K-6 and $20.00 per cohort

Cohort 2 and 4 are for 6-12 and $20.00 per cohort

Cohorts 1 and 2 engage teachers in an introduction to three-dimensional science teaching and learning as well as a set of GRC lesson plans for each of the Arizona Science Standards. Participants attend one day in January with one three-hour after-school follow-up session via Zoom. The Cohort 1 professional development will be on January 25 (full day together) and January 30, 2025 (afterschool virtual). Cohort 2 professional development will be on February 1 (full day together) and February 11, 2025 (afterschool virtual). The session will model effective science instruction and support teachers in learning the science content for their grade level. The teacher in elementary Cohort 1 will use the book Using Science Investigation to Motivate Students to Read, Write, and Engage in Discourse. Teachers in the 6-12 Cohort 2 will use the book Engaging Students in Science Investigation Using GRC. Both groups will have a book study with the authors of the book. This will be a fun opportunity for teachers to engage in academic discourse about best teaching practices that are practical for implementation in their classrooms.

Cohorts 3 and 4 engage teachers in a deeper dive into understanding science teaching and learning. The use of effective 3-dimensional science strategies with proven success in classrooms. Teachers will engage in hands-on investigations and be provided an opportunity to work with fellow teachers to develop Arizona-specific lesson plans and assessment tasks. This will be a fun and engaging professional learning experience you can take back to your classroom and use with your students.

Cohort 3 professional development will be held on June 9 and 10, 2025. Cohort 4 professional development will be held on June 12 and 13, 2025. The professional development will provide teachers with strategies for engaging students in planning and carrying out investigations, using reasoning to construct explanations, and communicating reasoning using writing, speaking, and models. In cohort 3, specific attention will be paid to using science investigations to motivate students to read, write, and engage in academic discourse. These full-day sessions begin at 8:00 am and end at 3 pm. The teachers have an opportunity to develop science lessons in a series of follow-up Zoom meetings. These lessons will be completed during the summer. The lessons will meet the ADE criteria for posting to the ADE website for other teachers to use.

Presenter - Sessions will be developed and led by Brett Moulding, a member of the National Academies Framework Committee, a lead writer on NGSS, co-chair of the NASEM report Investigation and Design at the Center, and lead author of the books A Vision and Plan for Teaching Science: Educator’s Guide to A Framework for K-12 Science Education, Teaching Science is Phenomenal, Engaging Students in Science Investigation Using GRC and Using Science Investigation to Motivate Student to Read, Write, and Engage in Discourse.

Elementary Cohorts 1 and 3 will focus on using science investigations to motivate students to read, write, and engage in discourse and how to use the GRC instructional sequence to build student expertise in science. Effective science and language arts integration will be modeled and teacher will receive resources to implement instructional improvements in their classroom.

K-6 Educators Cohorts

Cohort 1:

January 25, 2025 8 AM to 3 PM (in person at SRP) with a after school follow up January 30th. Book Study will be held virtual in the evening.

Cohort 1 Book Club Study: Participants can choose a chapter of choice to attend a virtual book club study

Cohort 3:

June 9th and 10th 8 AM to 3 PM (in person at SRP). Partial credit will not be given.

Follow-up Online Professional Learning Communities (PLCs): Participants will have the opportunity to attend follow-up online sessions, facilitated by Brett Moulding, that will focus on supporting educators in developing 3-Dimensional lessons aligned to the Arizona science standards. After lesson development these lessons will be used on the ADE webpage.

Participants must attend both days of the training to receive credit. Partial credit will not be given.
Schedule conflicts (personal, school, or district) will not be accommodated once the training has begun. Your registration confirms your attendance on both days as scheduled.
The same person must attend both days.
Make-up days will not be rescheduled for missed days due to illness or emergencies and must be communicated with ADE staff immediately.
